You're a Rat!

You crouch in the damp, twisting tunnels of the sewer kingdom, the scent of mildew heavy in the air. Your fur is slick with grime, a ragged cloak draped over your shoulders. Around you, your gang prepares for the heist of a lifetime—the vault of Baron Driar, packed with gold, relics, and the rarest cheeses. The torchlight flickers off the slick stone walls as you grip the hilt of your rusted dagger, your heart pounding with anticipation. With a nod from your leader, you slip into the shadows, ready to carve your name into the legends of the Lower Kingdom.

Rattagäng is a compact, DIY-forward, grungy TTRPG where you play as rats in a gang, committing crimes in the shady alleys and grimy waterways of a medieval Venetian-style sewer kingdom.

Features

  • Pocket-Sized Adventure: Everything you need to play, from character sheets to dice, fits perfectly into a standard Altoids tin.
  • Brutal and Fast-Paced: Intense, OSR-style gameplay where every move counts.
  • Craft Your Identity: Create a unique rat and form a gang with your fellow players that stands out in the treacherous Lower Kingdoms.
  • Tactile Strategy: Manage your resources with a physical token-based inventory system.
  • Build Your Rat Chest: Customize your own portable chest to carry all the essentials for your game.

DIY

Rattagäng was made with lots of room in mind for DIY. The Weapons & Items PDF includes a bunch of blank item tokens to fill out whatever kind of items you can think up for your game. You can use the item reference in the rulebook as a starting point, but go wild!

The Rat Chests are a core part of the vibe of Rattagäng. It's meant to be a compact and highly portable game. You of course don't need one to play, but it makes it all the more fun when you can customize an Altoids tin to match your rats aesthetic and fit all of your goodies inside.  Just cut out your character sheets and tape them to the inside of the tin (stats on top, inventory on bottom). Then print your rule book and fold it mini zine style and it fits easily inside the tin.

Acknowledgments and Notes

This game is a simultaneous love letter and shameless hack of some amazing games.

Mausritter: By Isaac Williams is the obvious main inspiration. Rattagäng would not exist without the base which is Mausritter.

Knave: By Ben Milton is another major mechanic and vibe inspiration for Rattagäng.

This game was created for the #1pRPGJam. It heavily pushes the boundaries of what is allowed in a one page rpg, but this was my first ever submission and I got a bit carried away. I had a blast letting my imagination run wild in this tiny kingdom of rats and corruption and I hope you do too! Please feel free to hack and expand upon anything in this game.

Rattagäng isn't done yet! I'll be posting updates as they come to make the game better and smoother!

If you play it or give it a look, please let me know how it goes/what you think! And make those Rat Chests!

Everything about this game is just so good. I love the aesthetic, how compact it is, and the theming! I actually ended up playing this solo on my stream and had a great time. This game packs a lot into a small package~ 🐀

If anyone would like to see my silly one-player play of this game the segment starts at 1h 54m!

Thanks so much for checking out Rattagäng! You did an amazing job adapting this to solo!

A lot of the little confusing rules stuff I’m already working on clarifying for an update so thank you for pointing them out! But every assumption you made was correct!

There’s more Rattagäng coming soon! I think Ratitto might have to make an appearance in a future release 🤘

Thanks so much again!

First off, super fun! I like everything about this. Maybe the inventory/injury system was lifted from somewhere(?), but it seems very cleanly implemented.

There is a typo, "If you have are dual wielding a," in the section on weapon USAGE.

Is Grunge the same as Grit?

I love the setting and descriptions!

And here's a rat, Miter Fell, of the Scummer Clique:

Cheers :)

Thank you for the feedback!! It’s so helpful!

The inventory is adapted very closely from the inventory system in Mausritter, so you are correct!

And the “Grit” on the character sheets was a typo, it was in fact supposed to say Grunge. I uploaded a fixed character sheet pdf!

And Aah! Mitter Fell looks incredible!!

Thank you so much again!
